History

Originally the Roberts Building, the eventual home to Murray’s Drug Heppner was built in 1901 as a replacement for the local saloon, later referred to as ‘The Rock Saloon.’ Constructed from stone harvested from a local quarry on Balm Fork, this building is meant to stand the test of time. It remains one of the only buildings to survive the flood of 1903 – deemed to be the worst natural disaster in Oregon’s history.

Home to many businesses over the years — including an opera house, a dance hall, a bowling alley, and a photography studio — it was in 1959 that Rod and Meg Murray officially took control of the local drug store. They were able to officially purchase the building in 1973 and later expanded, breaking through the stone wall into the I.O.O.F. building next door which had been the Roy Quackenbush Grocery.

Since 1959, the Roberts building has been in the loving hands of the Murray family. Passed down from Rod and Meg to their son John and his wife Ann Lindsay in 1990, it is now run with the help of a third generation of Murrays: Sean and Laurie.
